It has united in fact the scientists in humanities of the whole Ukraine around the issues of thorough study of Ukraine.

Its activity concerning the investigation of people culture and life, social aspects of life has been realized not unsystematically, but purposefully, on the basis of well approbated programmes, important projects of statehood matter.

Carrying on the development of the forerunners heritage, the Department has initiated new research trends, studying customary law, life of agricultural and industrial workers, using new approaches to the investigation of material culture, ethnic statistics.

Publishing practical experience of the Department is represented in the research. A wide characteristic of the themes and content of the published works in the profile editions of the Department – Proceedings of the South-Western Department of the Russian Geographical Society – is proposed.
