Solo-Songs of Ukrainian Diaspora Composers to Maksym Rylskyi’s Texts through the Lens of the Word and Music Synthesis

 

Abstract

The relevance of the research is caused by the profound study of the heritage of the famous Ukrainian poet and scientist Maksym Rylskyi, especially its interpretation in musical art.

A review of the vocal works of the Ukrainian diaspora composers (Anton Rudnytskyi, Vasyl Shut’, and Ivan-Bohdan Vesolovskyi) to Maksym Rylskyi verses is proposed in the article. The solo-songs ‘Mother’ from the cycle ‘Four Songs about the Enthralled Ukraine’ by Anton Rudnytskyi (the USA), ‘Mariya’ by Vasyl Shut’ (the USA), ‘Who?’, ‘The Sailor’, ‘The Dews Have Fallen on the White Buckwheat’ by Ivan-Bohdan Vesolovskyi (Canada) are analyzed for the first time through the lens of the synthesis of word and music.

Poetical texts by Maksym Rylskyi from the collection of his works and the Ukrainian diaspora composers’ musical scores published in Ukraine and the USA are used as the source base of the study.

Historical, axiological, culturological approaches and their corresponding methods determine the research methodology of the article. In particular, the historical-chronological method is used for the consideration of time and circumstances of the works creation; the musicological method is applied to analyze the shape of the solo-songs and their musical peculiarities; the axiological method has helped to determine their value; culturological methods contribute to the versatile compound introduction of the contribution of the workers of culture to the world and Ukrainian treasuries.

Scientific novelty of the research is in the introduction of previously unknown in Ukraine vocal works to Maksym Rylskyi poetry to the scientific circulation.

Conclusions. The vocal works of the Ukrainian diaspora composers (Anton Rudnytskyi, Vasyl Shut’ and Ivan-Bohdan Vesolovskyi) to Maksym Rylskyi poetry assure the interest of these artists in the poetry of the outstanding master of a poetic word, the creation of original solo-songs as the samples of the word and music synthesis relevant to our time and the indissoluble unity of artistic Ukrainianhood.
