Famine of 1932-1933 in Kuban According to the Archival Documents and Periodicals' Materials

Abstract

The archival documents of the Documentation Centre of the Newest History of Krasnodar Region and the published works of the emigrant press of the 1930s, concerning the Holodomor theme in Kuban, are analyzed in the article. The party decrees and the system of repressive measures of the Soviet authority as to the Kuban peasantry, the practice of stanitsas putting down on the black tables are described. The published works themes of the foreign press of this period are considered. According to the figures of the researchers, from 7–10 million of Holodomor victims 1 million (making more precise – 3.5 million) is formed by the population of the Northern Caucasus, mainly the inhabitants of the North-Western districts of Kuban. The unclassified papers of the Documentation Centre of the Newest History of Krasnodar Region, which have become a part of the museum exposition The Unclassified Tragedy: Famine in Kuban in 1932–1933 (Krasnodar, 2009) have witnessed the significance of this theme topicality for modern population of Kuban. The documents illustrate the discrepancy of the scope of planned grain purchases and the real amount of the gathered harvest, lower to a great extent from the planned one because of the drought and the agrotechnical mistakes in Spring, 1931. A share of Northern Caucasus has formed 60 million poods from the planned 285 million poods to August, 1932. It is 100 million poods for Ukraine. According to the party decrees on the fight with the grain purchases sabotage, the prodrazvyorstka, cleansing of the party ranks, the stanitsas putting down on the black tables have been realized in Kuban. These actions have envisaged a complete removal of the food supplies and the ceasing of all trade forms. As a result of these repressive actions, 63.5 thousand persons have been evicted from the stanitsas, 13.803 individuals are arrested till January, 1933. The settlements have become deserted. They are colonized by the families of the Red Army soldiers from Ural, the central districts of Russia. 38.504 migrants have arrived here in December, 1932. Wealthy peasantry of Kuban, Cossacks have been exterminated as a result of these measures. Despite the censorship cruelty, the events in Kuban of that time have been described in the emigrant press in a certain way (Caucasian Cossack magazine, Belgrade, Cossack. The Don Otaman Herald, Paris). The letters from Kuban with the messages about famine, cannibalism, repressions have been published there.
