Kaniv: An Ethno-Cultural Resource

Abstract

Historical and cultural heritage of the city of Kaniv in the context of the ethnic tourism resource base development is considered in the report. The modern forms of its preservation and presentation are also analyzed. The ethnic tourism today is one of the most widespread alternative forms of tourism, aimed at the attention attraction to the historical and cultural heritage of the nation or ethnic minorities. Kaniv is a regional centre in Cherkasy oblast of Ukraine. It is a tourist center and a place of historical memory for a long time owing to the disposal of T. Shevchenko National Preserve there.  Expositions of the local museums (Kaniv Museum of Folk Applied Arts, Historical Museum, Nature Museum of Kaniv Natural Preserve) acquaint guests with the history, traditional culture and art of the region. The city building (private houses, architectural monuments) fits with the peculiar mountainous landscape of the place. Recently opened farmsteads of green tourism in the city attract the visitors to the local rites, culinary traditions. The places of memory in the Kaniv centre are connected mainly with the military events: World War II, War in Afghanistan, Ukrainian-Russian War.  A chapel is built to commemorate the fellow countrymen perished in the ATO zone. Numerous events connected with the folk cultural heritage popularization are held annually by T. Shevchenko National Preserve.  International Kaniv Film Festival, International Multidisciplinary Festival of Modern Music and Art Sheva Fest happen for four years on end in the city.
