Abstract

A significant trend of the late 1950s through 1960s (the first post-Stalinist decade) was the liberalization of cultural and social life, which influenced the art by its appealing (albeit extremely limited) to Western and domestic pre-Soviet artistic experiences, which had been erased from the then actual creative space of Soviet painting in course of the 1930 to early 1950s. An important role in this creative renewal was played by the Transcarpathian school of painting, which since the latter half of the 1940s has joined the all-Ukrainian context. The traditions of European Modernism preserved in it, having passed through the prism of folk-art aesthetics, were a source of enriching the figurative and plastic language of painting, impacting on its development.
