Maksym Rylskyi and Levko Revutskyi: Verges of Collaboration

 

Abstract

The figures of Maksym Rylskyi and Levko Revutskyi occupy honourable and notable place on Ukrainian artistic Olympus, constantly attract attention of researchers. Their works are the subject of study of the scientists of various levels. They have been true friends, partners, co-authors. Their friendship has been emphasized repeatedly in public, so the subject of M. Rylskyi and L. Revutskyi mutual relation is always a topical one. The research of their intercourse is considered in the aspects including the similarity of life and creative ways, long-lived friendship, co-creation and direct cooperation during the preparation of Lysenko heritage.

They are different and original, but at the same time have much in common, that connect them (similar life circumstances and social-cultural conditions of the surroundings, where they are grown up and developed). Both of them have occupied the highest positions (they are the academicians, members of the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian SSR). They are known as the order-bearers honoured by the government, recognized during the life as the classics (the collection of works is published for both of them). They are respected in society and national favourites. Both are true erudites. They are born in nobility families, brought up in peasant folklore surroundings, they have early become orphans, have exceptional musical abilities, both are apprenticed to M.  Lysenko. They are obliged to him very much. D. Revutskyi – elder brother of Levko – has assisted their acquaintance, been Rylskyi literature teacher in gymnasia. Just thanks to him, Rylskyi has become a neoclassic, joined the translation of world vocal and opera classics into Ukrainian. M. Rylskyi often addresses to L. Revutskyi figure, analyzes professionally and assesses his works highly in his publicistic articles. A new version of Taras Bulba by M. Lysenko has appeared in artists close cooperation as well as musical compositions: songs, choruses, romance and symphonic poem, marked with vivid imagery, folklore features, deep penetration into essential characteristics of Ukrainian song folklore.
